#Fact
While widely known for his Big Bopper persona and his song "Chantilly Lace", Richardson was actually an extremely gifted songwriter; some think that if he had lived, he would have had a very successful career just from songwriting alone.
His son is producing a movie based on his life, with a tentative release date of February 3, 2009 (the 50th anniversary of his death).
Had completed a performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, along with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Following the performance, they boarded the ill-fated airplane that, shortly after take-off, crashed in a nearby field.
Though known professionally as the Big Bopper, Richardson was known by family and friends as Jape (a combination of his initials J.P.).
According to his son, Richardson was convinced that video was the wave of the future and not only made what might have been the very first music video, but also was working on a jukebox that could play videos.
Had a penchant for writing hot checks. Several of them are still thumb-tacked to the wall next to his 8x10 glossy photos at the KTRM studios in Beaumont, Texas, where he worked.
Is portrayed by Stephen Lee in La Bamba (1987).
Died in a plane crash at age 28 along with Buddy Holly, who was 22, and Ritchie Valens, who was 17. That day is now known as "The Day the Music Died".
Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to him for the flight of February 3, 1959, since J.P. was running a fever.
